Chapter 58

Yolanda and Easton watched the video on Ben’s phone three times.

Easton said, “Who was the first guy? The one with the light?”

Ben said, “On advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer.”

Yolanda giggled.

Easton said, “You do B&E as a hobby, or as a sideline?”

Ben said, “If the person on that video was the spiritual leader of the congregation whose building that is, then entering it at any time is no crime.”

Easton said, “You got some stones, showing that to me.”

Ben said, “Because you haven’t paid for lunch yet?”

Easton said, “That, and I swore an oath to uphold the laws of the Commonwealth. What was that first guy doing there?”

Ben said, “He might have been looking to see if the late Stan Bernstein had stashed any of the papers from the rabbi’s study before he got murdered.”

Easton said, “Who else has seen this video?”

Ben said, “Chief Laurence, and the guy that the remote device sent it to. I gave that phone number to Chief Laurence.”

Easton said, “I’m gonna pop over to Berona Township and chat with the chief.”

Ben said, “It might be more productive if you ran the phone number first.”

Easton said, “I might do that, if this guy I know would give it to me.”

Yolanda said, “Why are you guys talking like that?”

Easton said, “Testosterone. But Second-Story Rabbi here started it.”

Ben said, “First Story Rabbi. So now, let me tell you the first story.”

Ben then recounted the tale of how the Sanok home came into being from Polish Jews who started a burial society and eventually turned it into a board and care facility.”

“Everything went along as planned until about six or seven years ago,” Ben added.” By that time, only a few of the original Sanok residents were still alive. Their old director, a rabbi, retired, and his assistant, a lonely and horny widow, became the new director. She hired a part-timer who called himself Rabbi Jeremiah Geltkern.

“Geltkern had plans. He got the horny widow to open the Sanok Home to other old Jewish people. The newcomers agreed to sign over their life savings and property in exchange for lifetime care. The home took in about five million dollars. Had they invested it prudently and managed the Home wisely, it might have been enough to keep them going for quite a while.

“Because, once the newcomers moved in, they were paupers. The Home billed Commonwealth Medical Assistance for their care, and it received, all told, a significant fraction of its expenses. They also billed Medicare for all sorts of medical procedures, real and imaginary.

“Under Geltkern’s influence, the horny widow took three and a half million, cash from the home and started a pension fund. He got her to let him start a synagogue in Berona, for reasons still not clear. The Home paid Geltkern a second salary for this duty, and it paid to maintain the synagogue. These expenses, a new bed tax from Berona Township, and the lump-sum payment to the pension fund were such a drain on the Home’s finances that it had to take out a loan.
